Hydrated, Beautiful Skin: Winter Skincare Tips

When the cool winds of winter arrive — even if only for a few days in Thailand — many people get excited about the fresh atmosphere and prepare to welcome the cold to the fullest. But while we are enjoying this pleasant weather, our skin may not be enjoying it with us, because winter's cold, dry air causes the skin to lose water easily, inevitably leading to skin problems such as dryness, flaking, easy itchiness, and in some people red rashes and more. Don't let these skin problems spoil winter's lovely atmosphere. Today we bring you winter facial care tips to help restore dry, cracked skin to smoothness, hydration, and health all season long.

Avoid Hot Showers to Preserve Your Skin's Balance

Many people love a hot shower or washing their face with hot water because it feels warm and relaxing. But did you know that hot water can quietly destroy your skin's moisture? Hot water strips away the natural oils that help lock hydration into the skin. Using hot water frequently throws the skin off balance, leaving it dry, rough, and dehydrated, and can even lead to premature wrinkles. In cold weather especially, a hot shower may seem like a small pleasure that is hard to resist, but done too often, your skin can suffer before you realize it. To protect your skin and preserve its moisture, try washing your face or showering with room-temperature water instead of hot water, and after your shower, remember to apply moisturizer immediately to help lock hydration into the skin for longer.

Apply Moisturizer Within 3-5 Minutes After Washing Your Face or Showering

The first 3-5 minutes after washing your face or showering are the golden window when the skin absorbs moisture best, because while the skin is still damp it retains hydration from the water. Letting the skin dry out too much can cause it to lose moisture faster than usual. After patting your face and body until just damp, apply moisturizer right away — especially a rich-textured moisturizer such as a cream, which locks hydration into the skin better than an ordinary lotion, leaving skin soft, smooth, and healthy-looking all day. Keep your moisturizer or nourishing cream within easy reach, such as on your vanity or in the bathroom, so you can grab it immediately. Remember to moisturize both face and body, especially areas that dry out easily such as the elbows, knees, and shins. Choose products suited to your skin type — a cream for dry skin, or a fragrance-free moisturizer for sensitive skin. Don't let your skin go thirsty: try adjusting the timing of your post-shower routine, and you will clearly feel the change in skin that is more hydrated and healthier-looking.

Choose a Moisturizer Suited to Your Skin Type

In winter, our skin often faces air that dries out rapidly, causing it to lose water and moisture easily. Without proper care, the skin may peel, become rough and parched, or grow irritated more easily. Choosing the right skincare products is therefore essential. When choosing a moisturizer for winter, pick one richer than what you use in summer, since a richer texture retains moisture in the skin better, with ingredients that replenish water and lock in hydration such as glycerin, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and phospholipids. Those with very dry skin should choose an ointment-textured moisturizer, which retains moisture better than a cream or lotion. If you want an extra hydration boost, natural oils are another good option — suitable choices include almond oil, coconut oil, argan oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil.

Eat Skin-Nourishing Foods

As the weather cools and humidity drops, the skin becomes dry and rough, itchy, and prone to wrinkles. Most people reach for a cream or lotion to relieve dry skin, but replenishing moisture from the outside alone may not be enough — we should also hydrate from within with foods that boost the skin's moisture and supply it with minerals and vitamins. Omega-3 in particular, found in fish, chicken, and nuts and whole grains, helps dry, damaged skin recover to its former condition faster. Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A, C, and E — yellow, orange, and red produce loaded with beta-carotene — help reduce skin inflammation and protect the skin well from sunlight and pollution. Ladies can also enjoy water-rich fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cantaloupe, apple, kiwi, tomato, cucumber, or winter melon — another way to replenish the skin's water supply.

Drink More Water

In winter, many people unknowingly drink less water, because the cool weather makes us feel less thirsty and we sweat less compared to summer. In reality, though, the body still needs just as much water for its systems to function efficiently and to maintain the moisture of skin that tends to dry out and flake at this time of year. In winter's dry air, our body needs water to maintain its balance — supporting digestion, blood circulation, and the elimination of toxins. Drinking enough water reduces fatigue, sustains energy levels, and helps the brain work better. Drinking water in winter may seem like a small thing, but it has an enormous impact on health and beauty. Adjusting your habits to drink more water, avoiding drinks that dehydrate you, and choosing warm water will keep your body strong, your skin hydrated, and you ready to face the cold effectively. Don't let winter make you forget to care for yourself — drink enough water for skin that stays hydrated in the long run.

The weather changes frequently during this winter season, so beyond adding moisture to the skin, building strong, resilient skin is also worthwhile to keep it from becoming irritated or reactive easily. In addition to the winter skincare methods we have recommended, remember to keep your body warm and wear thick clothing to help shield your skin from the cold air. With that, we will all have beautiful, well-hydrated skin this winter.
